I thought maybe you should read this quote. It's from program notes for the American Composers Festival that is put on by the Pacific Symphony.
John Adams was interviewed for the program notes and was asked what his thoughts were on the direction of classical music and where it should be going:
"I'm now 57 and I don't want to blibly dismiss my younger colleagues. I was very frustrated whe nI was 30 and Elliott Carter and Pierre Boulez dismissed me. ANd I do think some of my younger colleagues are very interesting. But I don't think they're at their best when composing for orchestra or traditional 'classical' forms. I'm not even sure they can be called 'classical musicians.' In my generation, the composers who are still composing brilliantly as classical musicians tend to be Europeans, like Esa-Pekka Salonen. HE is a virtuoso; he can really make the orchestra dance. I don't want to sound arrogant, but my intuition is that the really interesting young composers in this country aren't intent on continuing the traditional symphonic format. They are best when, like the young New York composer Michael Gordon, they write for their own unique ensembles--and these have more in commong with alternative rock than they do with the European 'classical' tradition."
what an interesting quote. i'm sure 30 years ago adams was pissed at the status quo. i'm glad to see him support our little club. i'm not really sure that many of us even care about who is doing what with the orchestra these days. its kind of like finding out what a great time your republican cousins had eating at mcdonalds on their vacation to egypt.
props to adams for at least pointing out the sky has already fallen.
