monday morning quarterback

csuf's d.i.e. had a pretty good show last wed night in which we premiered david toub's piece this piece intentionally left blank. i thought it was a very effective composition and pretty good first performance. enjoy the mp3.

this performance represented the best of social networking and was made possible by david having a well designed website with scores and mp3's. he also is very smart by having some pieces in open c score that are easily adapted to any instrumentation (most pbe music is written this way) which is the point of the diverse instrument ensemble.

anyway ,it was a challenging but fun piece to play and great example of the exchange of ideas by making your music public. i look forward to playing more of music like this and encourage others to follow.

I wrote this on David Toub's website also as a comment.

What a surprise to hear such wonderful music this morning. Someone (probably Jeff Harrington) placed it on New Music Reblog (http://netnewmusic.net/reblog/archives/2007/05/ this_piece_inte_1.html)
and I showed up on my player on my walk today. I never know who does this, but I thank them.

And I thank you for the terrific performance. Great stuff.

One more question: What's Open C Score? I tried to google it, but came up empty.

i had to think a bit on this one...
i think it has two meanings;

first is based on writing new music in that open c score is shorthand for when you leave a piece untransposed and unarranged (indeterminant instrumentation). it's pretty common in modular music (like terry riley's in C).

the second is the proces of adapting any music that is already written. the csuf diverse instrument ensemble (d.i.e.) plays all of its music straight from C score. just go to the library, grab a score (hopefully in C) make copies, and block the parts in which you create a scratch orchestration for whatever ensemble of players that you have available. cornelius cardew had the first "scratch orchestra" and its become a interesting way to interact with a wide range of music.

overall c score has become a real practical solution that has allowed my ensemble to perform more often with a ensemble that expands and contracts to the players available.
