Brother Mallard
Brother Mallard is a four person ensemble assembled by John Marr in order to perform The Continuing Story of Counterpoint (TCSOC) by David Borden. Aside from "Part Nine," none of the remaining eleven movements have ever been performed on the West Coast. John Marr was introduced to the music of David Borden during composition studies with Dr. William Alves at Claremont Graduate University. John contacted Mr. Borden during June of 2006 and expressed an interest in obtaining scores for TCSOC for study and possible performance. Mr. Borden was very supportive of the idea, and asked John which movements he would like. John responded with four movements that he believed that he could get performed. He received the score and parts and began assembling the ensemble. John first contacted his colleague at Saddleback College, Norm Weston, who was immediately open to the idea. Lauren Baba, a music major at Saddleback who has performed with the Saddleback College New Music Ensemble, was very enthusiastic about performing new music. Finally, Ralph d'Ignazio, a former student of John's, was asked to join because he had already learned a good portion of "Part Five" on his own.
Borden originally wrote the music for his group, Mother Mallard (the inspiration for Brother Mallard's nom de plume ) which consisted of three keyboardists . The ensemble currently consists of Lauren Baba (Acoustic and Electric Violins), Ralph d'Ignazio (Electric and Bass Guitars) Norman Weston (Keyboards and Piano) and John Marr (Keyboards and Piano). In addition to works by Borden, Brother Mallard has expanded its repertiore to other composers . The group's ultimate goal is to create a functioning ensemble that will present new music to all listening ears.
